"I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)" es una canción del rapero Pitbull, lanzado como segundo sencillo de su álbum Rebelution. La canción está basada en "75, calle Brasil", de Nicola Fasano vs Pat Rich, que a su vez muestra "Street Player" por Chicago. El título es una referencia a la calle de Miami Calle Ocho.
When I was a child I did not listen to traditional children’s music, meaning my mother didn’t lose her sanity and I learned that “real” music didn’t revolve around the wheels on the bus, giant yellow animals or purple dinosaurs. Most of the time I’d listen to the Staple Singers, The Pointer Sisters, Bob James, David Sanborn (you must buy their Double Vision album!) Luther Vandross, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Kenny G, Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder, and a whole host of other artist, which, of course, included Teddy Pendergrass.
Pendergrass began singing at the age of 2, which makes everyone else look like slackers, now doesn't it? He was originally part of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. Surely no one forget If You Don’t Know Me By Now. His career was altered drastically following a car accident in 1982 that paralyzed him from the waist down. This accident spurred him to create the Teddy Pendergrass Alliance, an organization that assists individuals with spinal cord injuries “to achieve their maximum potential in areas of education, employment, housing, productivity and overall independence.” He’d continue to perform, releasing new material into the late 1990s, and received a Grammy nomination in 1989 for his song "Joy," yet it was his early music that still resounds with people today. My favorite song of his happens to be Love TKO. Please take a moment to enjoy and remember Pendegrass's life.
Folk tales, folk songs, fables and jokes all use the number three: three pigs, three bears, three sons, three attempts, three choices, three chances. This week, yet another loss rocks America with the death of Mary Travers, the "Mary" in Peter, Paul and Mary. Affecting statements from Peter and Paul appear on their web site.
I was introduced to their music at age 15 by a cousin from Canada, and immediately began collecting their albums. Having grown up with recordings by Pete Seeger and Burl Ives, the familiar folk format in a new setting thrilled us and provided material for many sing-alongs. The Biography Resource Center and Marquis Who's Who On the Web contain additional information about the life and career of Mary Travers.
May her music and her message be forever blowin' in the wind.
Musicians Life in Song got the party started, interspersing their own music with Karaoke. A mother and daughter team were our first “victims,” but it was the adults who really got into the singing. When it came time to show the movie---the kids voted for Get Smart---the adults informed me that the singing wasn’t over and they had to sing one more song. That one song turned into three. And as they gathered around and sang That’s WhatFriends Are For, I stared at the group with one thought:
Do these people even have kids, or did they just wander down here from the crowd of adults peering from the first floor railing?
I didn’t find out.
Needless to say, we’re looking into having adult music programs in the future.
Friday afternoon we had the pleasure of listening to the teenage band, Late Chaps, live in Kids' Place! Sean Clavere, Rob Mills, Marissa Olegario, and Tyler Walker played a soulful mix of blues, folk, country, and good ole' rock n' roll- both cover tunes and originals. Musically sophisticated beyond their high school years (they will all be seniors next term), these kids used their smooth and distinct voices to play skillfully with vocal harmonies, made finger twisting bass and guitar lines look like patty-cake, and rocked out on the drums. Most impressively, they accomplished something many musicians never do- they played for the space they were in, neither too loud nor too soft. It's not surprising that they beat musicians twice their age by winning a "battle of the bands" contest in El Dorado County in 2007. These guys (and girl) are just starting out, and it will be a joy to watch them musically mature. Keep an eye on them - they're definitely going places! Hear them here!
